The Asian tapeworm is an aquatic intestinal parasite that can infect freshwater fish, particularly in species of carp. This tapeworm can reduce body growth, cause anemia and eventually mortality in infected fish by absorbing the nutrients from its host. The Asian tapeworm has both female and male reproductive organs and can reproduce through self-fertilization. Eggs are released into the water with the host’s fecal material and hatch into freeswimming larvae. The larvae are consumed by crustaceans and infect fish through the consumption of the infected crustaceans.

The Asian tapeworm is native to East Asia and has been introduced in Europe, Australia and the United States. It has been reported to have been found in Manitoba’s Lake Winnipeg.

The silver carp is a fast growing fish that can be found in backwater habitats and channel borders with low velocity. This invasive carp is a threat to native species as they compete for plankton, including microscopic
plants (phytoplankton) and animals (zooplankton). They can also be hazardous to humans taking part in boating activities as the vibrations from a boat motor cause the silver carp to jump up to three metres out of the water. This is a safety concern for boat passengers and people performing water sports.

The silver carp is native to Eastern Asia and was first introduced into the United States between 1971 and 1973 and since then have migrated towards the Great Lakes spreading intrusively. The silver carp is very similar to native carp species so identification is important.

The rusty crayfish is an invasive crustacean that prefers bottom substrate of clay, silt or gravel with objects for protection such as logs and rocks. This is a very aggressive crayfish with a high tolerance for extreme water temperatures ranging from 0 degrees C to 39 degrees C. The rusty crayfish can damage an entire ecosystem. They compete with native crayfish for the same food and habitat sources, often causing a decline in the native species. This crayfish feeds primarily on vegetation diminishing crucial spawning habitat for native fish. A single female can create a new population with her ability to carry up to 200 fertilized eggs under her tail.

The rusty crayfish is native to the Ohio River Basin and has spread to many of the U.S. states and has also been introduced into Ontario. This aggressive invasive species is impossible to eradicate once introduced.

This species is native in rivers of China and Siberia. It prefers relatively low maximum air temperatures (5-18oC) and can tolerate up to 193 annual frost days. They can withstand freezing temperatures by hibernating or remaining dormant in the mud. Adult fish can grow up to 100 cm (1 meter) in length, can live up to eight years, and has no natural predators. Juvenile snakeheads eat zooplankton, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and the fry of other fish. Adult snakeheads feed mainly on other fish, with the remainder of their diet consisting of crustaceans, frogs, small reptiles, and sometimes small birds and mammals.

Northern snakeheads are capable of overland migration using their pectoral fins, are air-breathers, and can live for days out of water. The northern snakehead poses a high risk of establishment and spread across North America because it is adaptable to a wide range of aquatic environments and has a very broad latitudinal range and temperature tolerance.

The Eurasian watermilfoil is a fast growing, submerged, perennial, aquatic plant that can be found growing in water as deep as 10 metres, but 1 to 3 metre depths are preferred. This invasive plant can quickly take over and form thick mats in lakes and rivers. Even a small piece of the plant can be transferred to a new area and form new plants. This non-native plant reduces the ecosystem biodiversity as it crowds out native species and decreases recreational value. As it grows in dense patches it creates stagnant water that attracts mosquitoes which can impact recreational activities. The leaves of Eurasian watermilfoil have 12 or more thread-like segments. Native species may look similar but have less than 12 leaf segments.

Eurasian water-milfoil was introduced to North America in the 1940s, originally coming from Asia, Europe, and Northern Africa and has spread rapidly developing a very wide distribution. It is believed that this plant was first introduced to North America by ballast water of ships or from aquarium activities.
