Environmental Management Plan

In 2013, the District of Lakeland supported by members of the Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC), submitted an application to and was approved by the University of Saskatchewan’s School of Environment and Sustainability to engage the services of a graduate student that would assist us in developing a sustainable Environmental Management Plan for our municipality.

Throughout 2013 and 2014, the District and EAC members with input from the SK Ministry of Environment, held many meetings to provide sufficient background information for the development of the plan.

Throughout the discussions, numerous issues were identified that represented a concern for the municipality in terms of water quality, forest management and watershed protection. These issues include the number and operation of watercraft, regional development, shoreline alterations, lake water quality and the degradation of ecologically sensitive areas to name a few.

The District thanks graduate student Kyle Young and University of Saskatchewan School of Environment and Sustainability. The information in the Environmental Management Plan identifies and prioritizes issues related to eliminating or reducing detrimental effects on Lakeland. This provides the District with the blueprint for a sustainable plan to help sustain our natural environment for future generations.
