Acceptable Waste
Place these in the bear-proof bins or take directly to the transfer station in large amounts.
The bylaw speaks to what isn’t permitted more than it speaks to what is. Generally, ” household waste” means any solid that is an organic or inorganic material, including by-products discarding in the manufacturing process, empty or partly-empty tins, boxes, cartons, containers; discarded fabrics and papers, discarded utensils. Household waste does NOT include human excrement. Essentially, household waste is your kitchen and bathroom garbage, in addition to paper and cardboard contaminated by food, not including hazardous waste (see “unacceptable waste” below).
DO NOT dispose of waste that is recyclable or considered unacceptable waste (see below). Consider also the volume of waste being disposed… a full pickup truck can be taken to the large bin at the transfer station free-of-charge, and the transfer station is open every day until the end of August.
Recyclable Materials

Newspapers, flyers, inserts, flattened cardboard, box and paperboard, cartons, milk cartons, juice cartons, Paper- Office bond, photocopier paper, paper bags, envelopes, letter paper and computer printouts, telephone books, catalogues, magazines, Household tin cans, aluminum cans, Plastic shopping/store and grocery bags, Plastic soft drink and water bottles, Household plastic containers and bottles
Above items must be free from any soil or contamination and in the case of any container must be rinsed and caps removed. Plastic items must have the recycling arrows with a number 1 through 7 on the bottom. Please flatten cardboard boxes to not overfill the bins. Click here for a printable recycling guide.
Unacceptable Waste
Any automobile parts, batteries, liquid waste, hazardous substances, tires, building materials, fences, gates or similar fixtures, dead animals or parts of dead animals, concrete, grease, inflammable substance, furniture, major appliances, oil, propane tank, paint, and tires.
Sod, soil, and grass clippings can be taken directly to the transfer station free of charge.
Items over 1 meter in length and material that presents a health or safety risk to a person collecting (such as broken glass, sharp edged tin, exposed syringe, and any other such waste identified by the Public Works Manager.) should be taken directly to the transfer station.
